Windows 10 bridges the gap between PC and Tablet
THE GOOD Windows 10 bridges the gap between PCs and tablets without alienating anyone. The new OS combines the best bits of old and new Windows features into a cohesive package, while correcting nearly all of the missteps of Windows 8. The upgrade process is mostly painless, and free for most Windows 7 and 8 users.

THE BAD Many of the new features will be lost on those who don't care about touch. Automatic, forced updates could spell trouble later on. Cortana's features are better suited for smartphones.

THE BOTTOM LINE Windows 10 delivers a refined, vastly improved vision for the future of computing with an operating system that's equally at home on tablets and traditional PCs -- and it's a free upgrade for most users.

Windows 10 is the Goldilocks version of Microsoft's venerable PC operating system -- a "just right" compromise between the familiar dependability of Windows 7, and the forward-looking touchscreen vision of Windows 8.

This new Windows, available as a free upgrade for existing Windows 7 and Windows 8 noncorporate users, is built from the ground up to pursue Microsoft's vision of a unified OS that spans all devices without alienating any one platform. It's an attempt to safeguard Microsoft's crumbling software hegemony, assailed on all sides by Google and Apple. And it's a vision of the future as Microsoft sees it, where a single user experience spans every piece of technology we touch. Welcome to Windows as a service.

Yes, this new OS is chock-full of fresh features. To name just a few: a lean, fast Internet Explorer replacement called Edge; Microsoft's Siri-like voice-controlled virtual assistant, Cortana; and the ability to stream real-time games to your desktop from an Xbox One in another room. (And in case you're wondering: there is no "Windows 9" -- Microsoft skipped it, going straight from 8 to 10.)

World's first 8K TV costs $133,000

Sharp will begin selling the world's first 8K television just in time for Halloween.
Interested? You'd better be prepared to pay up. The 85-inch "LV-85001" ultra-high definition TV set will cost you ¥16 million ($133,000) when it goes on sale October 30.
There is another big caveat: There is hardly any 8K video to watch (heck, there is hardly any 4K programming available). Google (GOOGLTech30) made a big stink in June when it announced that its "Ghost Towns" YouTube video was available in 8K -- before any 8K monitors were in production.
The 8K TV standard has a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels. That means there are nearly 38 million pixels on the screen.
8K offers four times the resolution of 4K TVs (9 million pixels and a 4096 x 2160 resolution) and 16 times the resolution of a 1080p HDTV (2 million pixels with a 1920 x 1080 resolution).
Though 4K (let alone 8K) is still a rarity, the television industry is pushing hard to increase the standard broadcast resolution from HD to "ultra-HD" in the next few years. But there doesn't appear to be too much momentum behind that push.
To watch an 8K video on Sharp's new LV-85001, you'll have to use all four HDMI connectors and have a computer that supports 8K video output.
That's why Sharp says it is targeting "mainly corporate users" for the new LV-85001 8K TV. It suggested that museums might want to display art using the new TV, and industrial designers could use them to display blueprints.

This app makes sure You never walk Home Alone

"Text me when you get home" is a frequent farewell among friends and family.
But what if you could actually track their journey home, check in if they're feeling unsafe on their commute, and ensure that they can easily contact the police in an emergency?

That's all possible with a free app called Companion. Created over a year ago by a group of five students at the University of Michigan, the app has been gaining a ton of momentum after launching to the public two weeks ago.

The app, available on Android or iOS, lets users send requests to phone contacts to virtually track their trips using GPS.
The app has seen 500,0000 new users in the past week alone -- including me.
Why is everyone so excited about a safety app? I tried it out for myself. A friend of mine in Israel graciously agreed to let me track him as he walked to a coffee shop about 18 minutes away. (I also took my turn being the walker, but it was more interesting to be on the other end.)
I received an SMS text requesting that I be his companion. A link in the text sent me to the app -- though you don't need it to track someone. If not, it would have directed me to a map in a browser. Once I accepted, I could see exactly where my friend was.
The app uses the phone's built-in sensors to detect changes in movement -- like if the user starts running or the headphones come out. If that happens, the app asks users to confirm that they're OK. If they don't do so within 15 seconds, the app notifies your companion who has the option to call the police. At the same time, the app will also go into alert mode for the walker, emitting siren-like noises and displaying a button to also call the police.
If I had been concerned about something with my friend -- like why he wasn't walking faster! -- I could use the app to call him. Alternately, he could select, "I feel nervous," which would have prompted me to check in on him. Once he reached his destination, I got an alert that he was safe.
"We've seen so many amazing use cases," said 21-year-old Lexie Ernst, a cofounder who's a senior at the University of Michigan. She said everyone from senior citizens to kids studying abroad are using the app.
That wasn't exactly anticipated: The app was initially built to help tackle crime on college campuses, which the founders say is "way too prevalent."
The first version of Companion rolled out in November 2014 for students at the University of Michigan. The founders, three of whom are still in college, incorporated early feedback into the app's current version.
"We asked, 'What do people actually want to use,'" said cofounder Nathan Pilcowitz, 22.
The founders plan to add more features in the future -- like touch-ID technology so that only the phone's owner can hit the "I'm OK" button. That way, someone can't steal your phone and falsely tell your friends that you're fine.
Because Companion is collecting anonymous data on users' paths -- and where they "feel nervous" -- it's a potential goldmine of information that universities and cities could analyze to make streets safer.
For now, they're just working with University of Michigan, although Pilcowitz said others have reached out about potential partnerships.
"We didn't realize going into it how much people love safety," he said.

Bugatti shows real-life Videogame Car

Bugatti's Vision Gran Turismo offers an idea of what a future Bugatti might look like.

Bugatti, maker of 1,200 horsepower supercars with seven-figure price tags, unveiled a fantasy videogame car at the Frankfurt Motor Show. But this one wasn't just made of pixels. Bugatti engineers created a real, drivable version.

The Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is a model of the car that appears in the popular Gran Turismo videogame series. The real-life version is fully drivable but wasn't designed to comply with government safety regulations -- only racing regulations.
This concept car is particularly important because it offers a glimpse of what Bugatti's next model will look like. As part of the Volkswagen Group, Bugatti is related to luxury automakers like Lamborghini and Bentley, but is even more exclusive. Over the last decade, Bugatti has sold 450 cars worldwide at prices in excess of $1 million each. All of them were versions of one model, the Bugatti Veyron.
Powered by a turbocharged 16-cylinder engine, the Bugatti Veyron evolved over the years, gaining speed and power. Later models have 1,200 horsepower and top speeds in excess of 250 miles an hour. But now Bugatti is working on an all-new successor.
"Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is the first stage on a new journey that Bugatti is embarking on following the successful completion of its Veyron chapter," Wolfgang Dürheimer, head of Bugatti, said in a statement.
Dürheimer added that the new model will be unveiled "in the not too distant future."
Designers for the concept car drew inspiration from Bugatti racing cars of the 1920s and '30s. Based in France at the time, Bugatti won at LeMans in 1937 and '39. The Vision Gran Turismo was designed to excel on the LeMans track, which features long, straight sections -- putting a premium on top speed.

In this car, emphasis was placed on performance rather than comfort. Despite its extreme performance figures, the Veyron is comfortable and easy to drive on public roads. This car was created for the track, according to Bugatti.
A number of automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, General Motors and Lexus, have designed cars for the Gran Turismo game.

Underwater treasures: 10 stunning vintage photos of the American Dream

Bruce Mozert's underwater photography series was initially created as a commercial project for Silver Springs park in Florida. Although Mozert began this series as part of a marketing campaign for the park, it now showcases a rare and romantic look at society at the time.
Monroe first stumbled upon Mozert's work while researching Florida's Silver Springs area for an entirely different book. He happened upon Mozert's work while at a gift shop, and was struck by each photograph's composition: They were stunning -- I found them to be distinguished by their visual finesse, technical quality and cultural currency. They were spon on and I wanted to know their source, so I went to the studio to meet Bruce Mozert."
Although this series began as a commercial project for the Silver Springs marketing team, Monroe points out how they effortlessly capture the concept of the American Dream at the time. "Like most everything else Florida, these images advertised the American dream. Mozert was not engaged with such notions of course; had he been the images would be too self-conscious to be so timeless and meaningful."
Monroe points out that Mozert's attention to detail and experimenting with props and materials allowed for each underwater photo to so perfectly reflect the on-ground scene it was depicting. "Tiny fishing weights ensured that the hula dancer's grass skirt wouldn't float upwards, the bubbly in the glass of champagne resulted from Alka-Seltzer tablets, the smoke from the barbequing steak was made form condensed powdered milk."
Even for an image such as this one, Mozert and his team tested materials and props underwater before taking the photograph. "They tested the effect of the current on the arrow as it left the archer's bow -- she had to hit the target. No air hoses are visible in these photographs (with slight exception, they were not used). Silver Springs required something else -- the illusion of verity was key."
This juxtaposition of everyday activities being conducted in an unexpected location is, according to Monroe, the most alluring element of Bruce Mozert's work. "Maybe it's the precision of how the photographs encapsulated the sensibilities of a time and place that makes them special and timeless. His photos are, to me, so compelling and convincing. His photos make us suspend our disbelief long enough for the sublime quality of this art to work its magic. There's an unmatched surreal quality to his work,."
Although underwater photography is quite common in the industry today, Monroe points out that even now, few are able to capture these timeless moments quite the way that Mozert has. "None of today's underwater photographers, who are following the directorial mode of image making, are on the same wavelength as was Mozert. A couple of photographers back then also made staged underwater imagery, but Mozert took it to a higher level. His work is more refined but still naïve."
Mozert's work often showcase groups of friends or couples caught in social moments. "The photographs showed the same reality that defined popular white male-dominated 1950s culture. Mozert commented about the sensual quality of womens' hair underwater, and men drove those vacation bound cars."
Pin-up models are also common in Mozert's photography. "Attractive young women doing everyday activities underwater characterize his most intriguing work. They are novel but also fascinating, visceral and real -- in the sense that they don't suffer from the heavy-handedness of self-consciousness."
Although Mozert's underwater series were taken decades ago, Monroe points out that they are particularly captivating for viewers of today. "He never quite got the allure of his own work as being interesting photography in its own right. When I told him that I wouldn't be surprised by his work one day being shown at a Manhattan art gallery he almost rolled out of his chair in hysterical laughter. To him, it was all about making 'a saleable picture' back then for a few dollars."

There's a new way to invest in Bitcoin -- But buyer Beware

Bitcoin lovers have been searching for a way to safely invest in the enormous potential they see in the crypto currency.

Buying actual bitcoins has proven dangerous, to say the least. Just look at the unbelievable turbulence in Bitcoin prices -- the currency's value shot up 6,000% in one year before collapsing in value -- and the alleged fraud at the Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange that led many investors to lose money.
In theory, an exchange-traded fund, or ETF, that mirrors the price of Bitcoin would offer a somewhat safer alternative. Think: something akin to SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD), which tracks gold prices.
But no Bitcoin ETFs have been created. An effort by the twins Cameron and Tyle Winklevoss to do just that has been waiting two years to receive approval from regulators. The Securities and Exchange Commission is still trying to figure out how to define and oversee Bitcoin.
This week, ARK Investment Management announced a full embrace of the digital currency. Its ARK Web x.0 ETF (ARKW) became the first ETF to invest in bitcoins.
"Current prices present an attractive entry point for our investors," Cathie Wood, ARK's founder and chief investment officer, said in a statement.
But before taking a leap, it would be smart to read the fine print of the ETF, which trades under the ticker symbol "ARKW."
First, it's not a pure play on Bitcoin. Even though it announced the Bitcoin play, the ETF is actually an investment in what it calls disruptive technologies. The crypto currency represents just a slice of its holdings, packaged along with Netflix (NFLXTech30)LinkedIn (LNKDTech30) and athenahealth(ATHN), a cloud-based provider of electronic health records.
It's investing in pink sheet security, not actual Bitcoin
Second, the ARK ETF is not actually investing directly in bitcoins. It's buying shares of something called the Bitcoin Investment Trust. Most people haven't even heard of that.
That trust started trading in May on the pink sheets under the ticker symbol "GBTC." It's got a market valuation of under $40 million and very little trading volume.
The pink sheets, also known as the over-the-counter market, provide less transparency and oversight from regulators. They're like a Wild West alternative to the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.
"Pink sheets are where most investors aren't willing to tread," said Matt Hougan, CEO of ETF.com, a research firm.
GrayScale, which sponsored the Bitcoin trust, defended the decision to list on the pink sheets and noted that a number of major foreign companies such as Adidas (ADDDF) and Roche (RHHBF) list their U.S. shares there.
Spotty track record at mirroring Bitcoin
Another problem is that the investment hasn't really mirrored the price of Bitcoin, which defeats the purpose. At times the trust's shares have spiked or surged -- even though underlying Bitcoin prices were relatively calm.
"You're not really getting Bitcoin here. You're getting a Bitcoin derivative that kind of tracks the price of Bitcoin -- but not really well," said Hougan. "There are a bunch of leaps of faith in that chain of command."
The ETF company brushed away these concerns, suggesting that price volatility is actually a good sign.
Another risk for the investment is regulatory. The trust warns investors in disclosure documents that its future may be jeopardized by looming regulation from the SEC.
Bitcoin is not for the faint of heart
All of this is on top of the inherent risk that goes into investing in anything that has volatility of Bitcoin.
Founded in 2009, Bitcoin burst onto the financial scene this decade as investors looked for an alternative to traditional currencies. Prices skyrocketed more than 6,000% in 2013 before peaking at nearly $1,250.
And then prices collapsed, losing two-thirds of their value last year alone. While Bitcoin has actually calmed down a lot lately, it's still down 27% this year to $230 apiece.

PES 2016

BY CHRIS SCHILLING : PES 2016 might well be the best football game ever made.

To explain why is something of a challenge. The improvements don't lend themselves easily to snappy back-of-the-box soundbites. I can’t point to a single change or addition that makes all the difference. Rather, it’s a game that has been refined in dozens of small ways, all of which have a cumulatively positive effect. This year, PES has shaken off the last remnants of PS2-era rigidity, delivering a faster, more responsive and more fluid game of football. I’m always a little reluctant to make direct comparisons to FIFA – not least as I’ve only played the demo version of EA Sports’ game – because the two handle in such distinctly different ways. For my money, while FIFA more accurately recreates the look of the sport, PES is the game that most closely captures the feel.

For starters, there’s a much stronger sense of physicality this year. It’s most obvious when players jostle for possession (and, indeed, for position). Before, it often felt like outcomes were binary, but it’s no longer quite so predictable. Context is everything: whether you win or lose the ball in a challenge is dependent on a number of factors, taking into consideration the skill of the players involved and their position in relation to the ball and one another. A clean slide tackle is particularly satisfying: contingent on player momentum, they’re among the most tangible demonstrations of your ability to read the game and your opponent. Referees are thankfully more lenient than in real life: you can barrel into a challenge at speed, cleaning out the player as well as winning the ball, but as long as you make contact, it won’t automatically draw a foul. By the same token, if you repeatedly jab X while running alongside an opponent to attempt a standing tackle, rather than waiting for the right moment to step in, then you’re bound to concede a free-kick.

The attacking game has been tweaked, too, and it's here you'll first notice the effort Konami has invested in individualising players. Anyone with a low centre of gravity - like Alexis Sanchez, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero - is a joy to control, as these players have the balance to skip over challenges, occasionally stumbling when clipped but always striving to stay on their feet.
